Phone call left her speechless

When Northshore EA member Suzanne Black got a call asking if she wanted to introduce President Barack Obama in Seattle, two things ran through the Inglemoor High School science teacher’s mind. The first was whether this was really happening and the second was that she would have to find something appropriate to wear.  Watch what she said and, thank you, Suzanne Black, for representing educators in Washington.


Test questions stump everyone

Why did the animals eat the talking pineapple? Which animal was the wisest? Both of these rather absurd questions appeared on a middle school exam in New York that has middle schoolers and apparently everyone else stumped. The problem, of course, is that these test results determine the future of the students taking them as well as the future of the schools as high-stakes test scores are determining more and more.


Reports say voucher schools are not producing

No surprise here but a recent academic review strongly proves that the nation’s largest urban school voucher program, the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program (MPCP), doesn’t produce better student test scores or graduation rates.

High-stakes testing

The Washington Education Association is offering three scholarships of $1,000 each this year to educational support professionals who are pursuing a teaching career.

 

California middle school teacher is national Teacher of the Year

Rebecca Mieliwocki, an English teacher at Luther Burbank Middle School in Burbank, Calif., was named national Teacher of the Year Monday for her unconventional teaching practices and her deep commitment to helping students succeed. President Obama will honor her and all of the State Teachers of the Year at a White House ceremony Tuesday.

$96 million tax bump is good news -- & a sign to stop going backward

The Washington state Economic and Forecast Council reported that revenue projections had increased by $96 million compared to previous projections in November. Randy Dorn notes that it's good news, but not enough.
 

SPI says Washington state will apply for No Child Left Behind waiver

State Superintendent Randy Dorn has announced that he will apply for a waiver from the federal No Child Left Behind sanctions.
